Friendship Quilts
For this Outreach Project, our members make lap and “throw” quilts for residents in local nursing homes. Some of the nursing homes that we have “adopted” include Hawthorne House for the Profoundly Retarded, Nathan Miller Home, Somers Nursing Home and, our latest “adoptee”, Dumont Nursing Home. In addition to making quilts to give away, groups of members have also presented a “show and tell” program at several nursing and assisted living homes thus allowing the residents to learn about quilts and their makers.
The members of the guild felt that we would like to do something to help those affected by Hurricane Katrina – of course, the answer was "quilts." Our members made eleven bed-size quilts, the majority of which were given to the local Habitat for Humanity chapter to be distributed to Katrina evacuees who had been displaced to our area and the others were sent to Mississippi.
This past year, we have donated 62 lap quilts to the United Hebrew Geriatric Center and the Port Chester Nursing Home.
