Village Squares Quilters 2006
Raffle QuiltOur Raffle Quilt, “Square Dance,” is based on a Kaffe Fassett design, “Jewel Squares Blind,” from the book “Glorious Patchwork” by Kaffe Fassett with Liza Prior Lucy published by Clarkson N. Potter Inc., a member of the Crown Publishing Group. The Raffle Quilt Committee was entranced by the magic squares within squares displayed in “Jewel Squares Blind” so the group set about expanding the design from a quilt that measures 42 ½ inches x 39 ½ inches to a queen-size quilt measuring 85 inches x 90 inches!! The resulting quilt contains a total of 306 blocks; there are 6 different size blocks each of which has up to 4 different piecing patterns. The Raffle Quilt Committee produced paper-piecing patterns for all 306 blocks, pre-cut the fabric and then the Village Squares Quilters got to work paper-piecing all the blocks. The Raffle Quilt Committee then assembled the blocks to form the beautiful quilt top. Given the huge number of seams in the quilt, the Committee decided to have the quilt professionally machine quilted. Leslie Armando, Distinctive Quilting, complemented our piecing with her machine quilting. In November, 2005, the Village Squares Quilters voted on a recipient of a portion of the proceeds of the raffle quilt and chose “Hospice and Palliative Care of Westchester.” Hospice and Palliative Care of Westchester provides compassionate medical and social care and support to terminally ill patients and their families wherever they reside in Westchester County, i.e., in a private residence, assisted living, a nursing home or a hospital.
