Quilt Celebration X - 2008

Raffle Quilt

The Raffle Quilt Committee wanted to make a quilt featuring an “old-fashioned” pattern but present it in a thoroughly modern way. We found the answer in a wall-hanging, “Basket Bazaar,” by Ann Rhode, Berkeley, CA. From this small beginning, “* A Tisket, A Tasket *” was born!

After obtaining copyright permission from Ms. Rhode, the Raffle Quilt Committee set about expanding the design to make a queen-size quilt. Many thanks to our honorary committee member, Bill Sparacin, whose computerized image of our design helped us tremendously in finalizing the layout. The making of the raffle quilt was truly a group effort – 52 guild members were involved in piecing the blocks, basting the quilt and/or the hand quilting. The Raffle Quilt Committee wishes to thank the families of Abby Breslaw Shipper, Mia Blumenstock, Marlys Klein, and Bernice Ward for hosting our quilt during the eight weeks of hand quilting.

The Raffle Quilt has been pieced and hand quilted by members of the Village Squares Quilters.

Day1 Quilting the Raffle Quilt

The Village Squares Quilters voted on a recipient of a portion of the proceeds of the raffle quilt and chose “Morry's Camp.”

Morry’s Camp, located in Glen Spey, NY (Sullivan County), is a year-round youth development organization designed to help economically disadvantaged children from the tri-state area. It was founded in memory of Morry Stein who, with his wife, ran a traditional summer camp for 26 years. He loved camping and hoped that camp could be made available to all children regardless of their economic status. Students attend 4 weeks of summer camp for four years, at no cost to themselves, participate in traditional camp activities and spend their time learning nutrition, a stringed instrument, participate in educational programs and activities that enhance their social skills. In addition, throughout the school year, the students attend monthly goal-setting meetings. As juniors and seniors in high school, the young people are provided with mentors and opportunities to counsel younger campers and work towards attending college.
